SHOW: Unique Senna portrait on display at ASI

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 12 Desember 2014 | 23.01

Friday, December 12th 2014, 15:09 GMT

A unique portrait of Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna will appear in Europe for the first time at AUTOSPORT International 2015 next month.

British artist Ian Berry uses layers of denim to create his work, and his portrait of Senna - commissioned by the Ayrton Senna Institute to mark the 20th anniversary of the three-time F1 champion's death this year - was made using jeans donated by members of the Senna family.

The Senna portrait will be displayed as part of the F1 Racing grid during the January 8-11 event at Birmingham's NEC.

"I remember playing a racing game and we all wanted to be Senna. I was only 10 in 1994, but I remember," said Berry.

"In later life I realised that he was an icon that transcended the sport of motor racing and is one of the greatest icons of the 20th century and his legacy lives far into the 21st.

"To be told by the family that [the portrait] captured all his emotions and every part - the nose, mouth, eyes especially, and even down to the hair - it made me very happy."

After sharing some light-hearted conversation with presenter Steve Rider, Button admitted that it was a "strange situation" to be waiting for a verdict on McLaren's driver line-up for 2015.

As the video above shows, he also sparked a raucous reaction from the audience when asking if anyone in the room wanted to see him in Formula 1 next year.

AWARD: Mercedes-Benz heads Awards partners

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 01 Desember 2014 | 23.01

Monday, December 1st 2014, 13:12 GMT

This year's AUTOSPORT Awards, taking place in London on December 7, will benefit from the support of high-profile partners including Mercedes-Benz.

In the year that the German manufacturer dominated the Formula 1 world championship with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, Mercedes is also celebrating 120 years of motorsport.

"The AUTOSPORT Awards ceremony is one of the undisputed highlights on the annual motor racing calendar, and appropriately, the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel will be filled with great names, great drivers and great teams," said Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd CEO Gary Savage.

"It is a privilege to be a partner to such a prestigious and popular event, and our sponsorship is a combined effort between Mercedes-Benz's road car business and our Formula 1 colleagues.

"Our ongoing support of the AUTOSPORT Awards is a celebration of motor sport in general.

"It's a terrific event in its own right and one that we always enjoy attending, and at Mercedes-Benz, we are marking 120 years of motor racing this year, meaning the timing could not be any more apposite."

Mercedes-Benz is joined by several other partners for the 2014 AUTOSPORT Awards, with the Bahrain International Circuit, BMW, Castrol, Pirelli, Tata and UBS supporting the event this year.

AUTOSPORT.com will be covering the event live, with text commentary running throughout the evening as well as news reports on all of the award winners as they are announced on stage.

WEC: Webber has no recollection of crash

Monday, December 1st 2014, 13:20 GMT

Mark Webber says he cannot remember anything of his massive crash in Sunday's Interlagos World Endurance Championship race.

The Porsche driver remains under observation in hospital in Sao Paulo following the accident, though a statement on his website said he would return home to the UK "later this week".

Webber, who described his condition as 'sore and bruised', lost control of his 919 Hybrid at the fast Turn 14 kink that leads onto the Brazilian Grand Prix Formula 1 venue's start/finish start and had a heavy impact with the wall.

"I'm quite sore this morning and am pretty bruised and have got a stinking headache," said Webber.

"I've got no recollection of the accident or how it happened - the team is looking into the details to find out more.

"Thanks to the medical team at the track and here at the hospital who did a great job and are looking after me very well."

The Interlagos WEC race finished behind the safety car after Webber's crash, and ended with a first victory for Porsche as team-mate Neel Jani, Mark Lieb and Romain Dumas brought the #14 car ahead of champion pair Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi.

"On a positive note it's great that the boys in car #14 managed to bring home the victory which is a fantastic way to finish off the season," said Webber.

"I'm already looking forward to getting out there again next year."

F1: Caterham: Abu Dhabi gave team hope

By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 1st 2014, 15:44 GMT

Caterham's administrator says the decision to race in the season finale in Abu Dhabi was essential to give it a chance of Formula 1 survival.

While rival Marussia has closed down, with its assets due to be sold off at auction later this month, Caterham is still in talks with potential purchasers.

And although there is no guarantee a deal can be reached, acting team principal Finbarr O'Connell says that the profile boost Caterham got from racing in Abu Dhabi delivered a boost to its hopes of finding a buyer.

"We are talking to a very serious party who, if we had not gone to Abu Dhabi, we would not be talking to," O'Connell told AUTOSPORT.

"It justifies what we have done.

"We were blown over by how successful an idea it was [to race], plus the enthusiasm it got.

"It achieved everything we wanted."

As well as boosting interest from buyers, Caterham's presence in Abu Dhabi has also made other teams more aware of its plight.

In both Abu Dhabi, and in last week's F1 Commission meeting in Geneva, rival teams gave a provisional green light to the prospect of the team running a 2014 car or engine if it would help the team survive.

The prospect of not needing to design a bespoke 2015 car could hand Caterham valuable extra weeks to find a purchaser - with the team initially having laid down a pre-Christmas deadline to secure a buyer.

O'Connell said the support of rival teams had been welcome, as he sensed there was a wider desire to see Caterham survive.

"The support in the paddock is absolutely phenomenal," said O'Connell, with Caterham only racing in Abu Dhabi thanks to support from partners including Red Bull, Renault and Pirelli.

"They have really supported us, and they have a vested interest in us surviving. It's been amazing."

GT: WRT Audi fills Baku BSS front row

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 01 November 2014 | 23.01

By Stuart Codling Saturday, November 1st 2014, 14:06 GMT

WRT Audi, Baku BSS 2014

WRT Audi driver Stephane Ortelli snatched pole position for the final round of the Blancpain Sprint Series by 0.038 seconds from team-mate and overall Blancpain GT title hopeful Laurens Vanthoor.

"I was a bit disappointed at being told I was P2," said Vanthoor, "but when I heard it was Stephane [ahead], my team-mate from last year, it wasn't so bad."

Jeroen Bleekemolen, who retains an outside chance of winning the BSS title, was third fastest in a Grasser Racing Lamborghini beset by ABS problems, while Sprint points leader Maximilian Gotz qualified his HTP Mercedes seventh.

"I had a big issue in Q2," said Bleekemolen, "the same as we had in Slovakia, where the front-left locked up.

"We really rely on the ABS here. Fortunately it started working again, but then I had a bit of traffic in Q3.

"It's a shame because I'd let the guy past on his fast lap and he didn't return the favour."

After extended rainfall earlier in the day the track slowly dried out during the session, which ended in twilight, 30 minutes behind schedule, after three enforced stoppages.

The first part of the session was red-flagged twice. With 7m44s left on the clock, Vincent Abril hit the wall at the exit of the final corner in the WRT Audi R8 he shares with fellow Silver Cup frontrunner Mateusz Lisowski, losing a wheel.

The second stoppage came with 38s remaining after many drivers went out for a last-ditch attempt to improve their times.

Thirteenth-placed Marc Basseng took too much kerb at the exit of the second chicane as he began his first flying lap after leaving the pits, removing the front-left corner of his Phoenix Audi.

Benjamin Hetherington also brought out the red flags, mid-way through the second segment of the qualifying session, when he strayed wide in the Fortec Mercedes at the final corner and twitched into the outside barrier.

WEC: Porsche and Toyota tie for China pole

By Gary Watkins Saturday, November 1st 2014, 07:56 GMT

Porsche, Shanghai WEC 2014

Porsche and Toyota were tied at the top of the timesheets after qualifying for Sunday's Shanghai round of the World Endurance Championship.

The #14 Porsche 919 Hybrid qualified by Neel Jani and Romain Dumas and the #8 Toyota shared by Anthony Davidson and Sebastien Buemi ended up with an identical four-lap average of 1m48.300s.

The Porsche will start from pole position, however, because it posted its average before the Toyota.

Jani, who set the fastest time of the session with a 1m47.036s, topped the timesheets after the first runs from Porsche team-mate Mark Webber.

Buemi jumped to second ahead of the #20 Porsche, which Brendon Hartley took over from Webber, after two slow laps between his first and second quick laps.

His average at that point was just one hundredth of a second down on the pole-winning Porsche despite a lock-up at the Turn 14 hairpin.

The Swiss then tried again after another slow lap and posted his fastest lap to lower his average and tie with the Porsche.

Jani said: "I thought that kind of thing would be impossible, but we are happy to hang onto the pole after they came from behind to beat the #20 car at Fuji last time out.

"I was watching the Toyota thinking, if only I'd been a bit quicker at this corner or that corner, and then we'd be safe."

Jani believed he could have gone quicker had he had a proper run on new tyres prior to qualifying.

Davidson and Buemi both admitted to mistakes during their qualifying runs.

"The first lap when the tyres were at their best didn't happen for me," explained Davidson.

"That lap was so scruffy, so I felt that I threw away the opportunity to extract the time on the brand new tyres."

Buemi reckoned that he would have done enough to claim the pole without the Turn 14 lock-up.

Webber and Hartley ended up with an average 0.024s behind the top two.

Alex Wurz and Kazuki Nakajima were a further two tenths back in fourth, while the two Audi R18 e-tron quattros again ended up fifth and sixth in the hands of Loic Duval and Lucas di Grassi and Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer.

LIGIER AND ASTON TOP CLASSES

The G-Drive Racing Ligier-Nissan JSP2 claimed LMP2 honours with Roman Rusinov and Olivier Pla driving.

F1: Teams do not have answer to F1 crisis

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, November 1st 2014, 00:56 GMT

US GP Friday press conference

Formula 1's bigger teams admit that there is no easy way to cure the sport's financial woes, as smaller outfits spoke out on Friday about the need for action.

The collapse of the Caterham and Marussia teams has highlighted how big F1's cost problems are, and has prompted fresh calls for action to be taken before other outfits fall off the grid.

But despite an acceptance that the costs issue needs addressing, it became clear during a lengthy press conference on Friday that teams remain at odds over what needs to happen.

Smaller teams are pushing for a fairer distribution of revenues, cost cuts and a budget cap, while their larger rivals believe that such changes will not solve the problems, and could actually cause further trouble like mass redundancies.

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said: "The teams in F1 today should stay in F1 and they should all look at the situation and come up with a short-term plan, how to have a healthy grid, and a long-term plan.

"We are talking about money distribution which is an issue for the commercial rights holder, and I don't have a solution.

"I can come up with many ideas which can be short term solutions but it comes back to the principle that whatever you give to the teams they are going to spend."

McLaren racing director Eric Boullier added: "There is a wake-up call maybe for everybody to make sure we can act altogether and we will try."

SYSTEM NEEDS CHANGING

Lotus owner Gerard Lopez believes that there were aspects of F1 that he found unacceptable, as he singled out the bonuses that Ferrari gets for competing.

"Now is the time to say things as they are," said Lopez. "Number one: the distribution model of revenues is completely wrong.

"When you've got teams showing up to the championship that get more money just for showing up than teams spending a whole season then something is entirely wrong with the whole system, and so that cannot be allowed to happen."

Lopez also singled out the dramatic jump in engine costs this year - which had forced budgets higher - as a key factor in hurting smaller teams.

FINDING A SOLUTION

The anger of the smaller teams at the situation is clear, especially with Force India's deputy team principal Bob Fernley hinting at hidden agendas from the big teams.

And although suggestions of a potential United States Grand Prix boycott by Sauber, Lotus and Force India have been played down, those three teams are likely to do all they can to try to force change.

Speaking about if there was a serious threat to not race, Lopez said: "I've just found out about the story now, so my answer is no.

"I've had a meeting with them about the cash distribution and so on, and that's it.

"I'm not aware of this. I don't even know where this comes from, and that's the whole point."

But he did admit that things had to change quickly, and action had to be forthcoming.

Bernie Ecclestone, Gerard Lopez, F1 2014

"I don't think there is an agenda - I sure hope there is none - but things have to drastically change in the next couple of weeks," he said.

"Not because teams are going to be driven away, but because if you don't take a situation like this one seriously, to change something, then you are never going to do it."

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone spoke briefly on Friday about the costs crisis, but reckoned a bigger issue for him was not the potential demise of other teams but changing the engine rules.

"We need to get rid of these engine regulations because they don't anything for anybody - they are not F1," he told Sky, while not ruling out the grid shrinking to 14 cars. "We are going to try for sure."
