Porsche, Spa WEC 2014

Porsche topped the times in final free practice for Saturday's Spa round of the World Endurance Championship with Marc Lieb at the wheel of the #14 919 Hybrid.

The German ended the two-hour session held in dry conditions with a 1m59.887s lap, which put him seven tenths up on second-fastest Sebastien Buemi at the wheel of the best of the Le Mans-spec Toyota TS040 HYBRIDs.

Third fastest was the quickest of the Audi R18 e-tron quattros, Andre Lotterer ending up a further tenth back on a 2m00.738s

Stephane Sarrazin (Toyota), Lucas di Grassi (Audi) and Mark Webber (Porsche) filled out places four to six on the timesheets.

The additional Audi on the entry at Spa, which is running in low-downforce Le Mans configuration unlike its two sister cars, ended up seventh on 2m02.620s in the hands of Filipe Albuquerque.

Olivier Pla was fastest in the OAK Racing-run G-Drive Morgan-Nissan in the LMP2 division, his 2m08.673s bettering Kirill Ladygin's best in the SMP ORECA-Nissan 03 by four tenths.

Gianmaria Bruni held sway for Ferrari in GTE Pro with a 2m18.913s.

The time was only two tenths quicker than the GTE Am best set by Klaus Bachler in the Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR and six tenths up on team-mate Davide Rigon in the second-place Pro entry.

Qualifying for the Spa 6 Hours starts at 7:20pm local time on Friday evening.

F3: Giovinazzi sets Hockenheim F3 pace

By Andrew van Leeuwen Friday, May 2nd 2014, 13:16 GMT

Antonio Giovinazzi

Antonio Giovinazzi led the way in practice for the second round of the Formula 3 European Championship at Hockenheim.

The Carlin driver topped both 40-minute sessions, with a best of 1m33.135s the benchmark time.

Lucas Auer was second fastest in his Mucke Motorsport entry, a late run on fresh rubber vaulting him into second place with a 1m33.337s.

That late lap knocked Max Verstappen down to third, the Dutch rookie having previously sat in second place.

The race winners from the Silverstone opener finished fifth, sixth and seventh, Prema's Esteban Ocon leading Tom Blomqvist (Carlin) and Antonio Fuoco (Prema).

Nicholas Latifi made it three Prema cars in the top 10 with the eighth fastest time, ahead of Carlin duo Jordan King and Ed Jones.

F1: Stepney killed in traffic accident

Friday, May 2nd 2014, 15:30 GMT

Nigel Stepney

Nigel Stepney, the former Ferrari mechanic who was at the centre of the 2007 Formula 1 'spygate' scandal, has died.

The 56-year-old was involved in a road traffic accident in Kent in the early hours of Friday morning.

A statement from the Kent Police said that investigations were underway as to the cause of the incident.

PC Glen Braidwood of Kent Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "A silver VW caddy van, driven by a 56 year-old man from the Essex area, had stopped on the hard shoulder of the M20 Londonbound carriageway at Ashford.

"For reasons yet to be established, the man appears to have entered the carriageway and was then in collision with an articulated goods vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Stepney enjoyed a lengthy career in F1, working for Shadow, Lotus, Benetton and Ferrari.

Having left F1 in the wake of the 2007 spy affair between McLaren and Ferrari, Stepney most recently worked in sportscars - joining the JRM outfit in 2010.

James Rumsey, the owner of JRM, was one of the first to pay tribute to Stepney.

"Nigel was an intense and fierce competitor and always strived for excellence in our racing," he said.

"We certainly could not have achieved our level of success without his leadership and experience.

"Away from the track, he was a focused, driven and passionate member of the JRM Group, and a loving father to his family.

"The rest of the engineering and race team here at JRM learned an unimaginable amount from Nigel in the four short years he was with us and his death this morning has shocked everyone to the core.

"Today, the motorsport world has lost one of its greatest characters and competitors. He will be sorely missed and we send our sincere condolences to his family and the many friends he leaves behind."

WRC: Ostberg trying to copy Loeb's style

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 01 Mei 2014 | 23.01

By David Evans Thursday, May 1st 2014, 14:17 GMT
Mads Ostberg, Citroen, WRC Portugal 2014

Mads Ostberg says he has found more speed by tailoring his driving style to replicate nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb's handling of the Citroen.

Ostberg said his sideways style was not suited to the DS3 WRC, but setting the car up more like Loeb and driving it straighter - in the same way as the Frenchman - is already working in his favour.

"We have changed the suspension settings on the car," said Ostberg. "There are also some changes in the differential, but the main thing that I'm doing is to drive the car straighter - less sideways.

"This is the way the car was designed to go fastest, it's the way it was designed by Sebastien Loeb and it's working for me.

"At some tests I drive like old Mads and it's not as fast. OK, there's not much in it, but it is not as fast."

Ostberg has finished on the podium on two of his four Citroen outings and the Norwegian is pleased with the progress he is making.

"I see a big change from this time last year," he said. "And it's a positive change.

"I'm really pleased with what I've been able to do so far this season. This has been a fresh start for me with a new team and I'm now looking to make the maximum out of this opportunity.

"I feel ready to win rallies and I have felt like that for some time now.

"But, if you look at the experience and results I have and put them in perspective, maybe Argentina [next week] is a place I go looking for a good result and then I think I have a bigger chance [to win] in Sardinia, Poland and Finland."

F1: Old car set-up hampered Lotus

By Ben Anderson Thursday, May 1st 2014, 12:37 GMT

Romain Grosjean

Romain Grosjean has revealed that settings carried over from last year's Lotus Formula 1 car have held the team's new machine back in the early part of the 2014 season.

Lotus has suffered a disastrous start to 2014, after being in contention to finish third in the constructors' championship until the final race of last year.

Its twin tusk E22 was unreliable and off the pace across the first three races, but showed signs of improvement at the most recent grand prix in China, as Grosjean ran inside the top 10 before a gearbox problem forced him out after half-distance.

The Franco-Swiss driver revealed that Lotus only began refining the set-up on the E22 during Friday free practice in China, after previously heading down a blind alley with settings from last year's successful E21 design.

"We started a little bit on the back foot with baseline set-up, which wasn't the ideal for this year's regulations," Grosjean told AUTOSPORT.

"It was very difficult to drive and not very efficient.

"They [the rulemakers] changed tyres, aerodynamics and power unit and we kept the direction we had last year, which was very good with E21 but didn't quite work with the E22.

"We have ideas now on how to set up the car to make it easier to drive. We just have to keep working."

Lotus team owner Gerard Lopez revealed that Grosjean would have been even more competitive at Shanghai had he not encountered issues with the diffuser stalling and robbing the car of rear downforce.

'UNSTABLE AND UNPREDICTABLE'

Grosjean told AUTOSPORT he had not driven a more difficult car in his career than the pre-China E22.

"It was very unstable and unpredictable," he added.

"The front is less obvious on TV but it was both ends. We didn't even know which one was going to slide!

Romain Grosjean

"It was down to last year's set-up not working for this year's regulations and the aero not working as we wanted. It's all linked.

"We had a big improvement in China, but it's not only one thing we changed; in the end it's a lot of things that make a good car."

With Lopez reckoning engine supplier Renault brought improvements to China worth two seconds per lap to Lotus, and more tweaks planned before next month's Spanish Grand Prix, Grosjean is hopeful he can return to the sort of form that carried him to six podiums last season.

"I'm sure there's more potential in the car than what we are seeing right now," he said.

"You never know. It goes quick in one direction and goes quick in the other [sometimes]. It's just work and getting things together.

"If we can move forward from there it would be nice to be back on the podium."

F1: Force India revelling in McLaren plight

By Ben Anderson Thursday, May 1st 2014, 15:47 GMT
Force India and McLaren, Chinese GP 2014, Shanghai

Force India is revelling in beating ex-technical partner McLaren in this season's Formula 1 constructors' title race, according to deputy team principal Bob Fernley.

Vijay Mallya's squad led McLaren for the first half of last year's battle, until its competitiveness faded following Pirelli's decision to tweak its tyre compounds in the face of repeated blowouts.

Force India currently lies third in the 2014 constructors' championship, 11 points ahead of McLaren, which has failed to score in the last two races.

Fernley reckons it will be difficult for Force India to raise its level to that of frontrunner Mercedes, or Red Bull, but he is hopeful the Silverstone-based outfit can continue to fight Ferrari and remain ahead of McLaren across the rest of the campaign.

"Lotus are struggling at the minute and are not where they want to be and McLaren would be our next competitor and they're struggling too. I'm not in the slightest bit sad about that - may their problems not be too insignificant!" Fernley told AUTOSPORT.

"It would be hard for us to compete with Red Bull and Mercedes. It's not going to be easy for us to [continue to] compete with Ferrari, but for as long as we can, we will."

Nico Hulkenberg fought Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in each of the first two races and Fernley said this represented a "major step" for Force India, despite the fact Hulkenberg finished a distant sixth to Alonso's third in China.

"If you look at our historical results we tend to be a bit up and down, whereas now we're absolutely consistent across the circuits," Fernley added.

"If you look at Ferrari, they're probably the exact opposite to us: Bahrain was an Achilles' heel for them and in China they fit in much better.

"It's just the DNA of the designs in some cases.

"If you look at Australia and Malaysia, Nico and Fernando were battling all the way through, so you get that bit in the middle as well.

"We come out of this [early part of the season] feeling quite pleased."
