V8: Kelly sure Nissan can be competitive

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 03 Desember 2012 | 23.01

By Sam Tremayne Monday, December 3rd 2012, 11:30 GMT

Nissan V8s AltimaRick Kelly is convinced Nissan's new V8 Supercar challenger has the potential to be competitive in its debut season next year.

Kelly got his first taste of the Altima on Sunday, in a short demonstration run which followed the car being displayed at the Sydney Telstra 500.

2006 champion Kelly, whose Kelly Racing team will run four Altimas in the series next year, said he had been massively encouraged by his first run.

"That was just demonstration laps at 60 per race pace, but every time you jump in the car is obviously helpful," he said. "We haven't done a lot of miles in the Nissan so the fact it is rolling around the track is a good thing for us.

"It has run faultlessly ever since we put it on the track and that is an achievement in itself for us. We can't wait to go in for a proper test day.

"Everything is on target for us to be very competitive.

"There are three things it will take: the right chassis and suspension, which we have got, an aero package the same as everyone else's out there, and having the same horsepower.

"All those things for us are on target, and if we can produce the same numbers as everyone else - which is looking strong right now – it just comes down to us doing a really good job on the weekends and driving the car right."

Kelly said production schedules were also on target, and predicted that the current version of the car will only be modified in minor ways before its competitive debut next year.

"Everything is on schedule for the other three cars we are producing – one for each driver – and then we will produce a spare as well.

"We have this car here which is complete, one exiting the paint shop, a third chassis which is built and the fourth which is starting now, Todd's car, which we don't need until February. Everything is on target.

"The car has already completed a bit of aero testing, it's well and truly on the way and in the next two months able to get on the track knowing what package we have got.

"Certainly what we have now is something we have designed in-house and tested on a very strong computer programme, so any changes will be very fine.

"The support has been really strong ever since the announcement back in February, much stronger than we anticipated which is really good.

"For the sport and for us it's fantastic to see a new crowd coming in. Next year the support for our race team will be stronger than ever. [The Altima] already feels like home."

INDY: Andrew Craig rules out IndyCar role

By Matt Beer Monday, December 3rd 2012, 12:00 GMT

Andrew Craig Former CART boss Andrew Craig has ruled out returning to American single-seater management as part of the IndyCar Series' organisation reshuffle.

Reports in America had identified Craig as one of a number of potential targets for IndyCar and Indianapolis 500 owner Hulman and Company as it restructured following the split with Randy Bernard.

But Craig said that while he saw "great potential" in IndyCar at present, he would not be interested in returning.

"It is always nice to be considered but I would not be interested in going back," Craig told AUTOSPORT.

Craig was chairman and CEO of the CART Indycar/Champ Car World Series from 1994 to 2000.

F1: Brawn: Hamilton wins still aim for 2013

By Jonathan Noble and Pablo Elizalde Monday, December 3rd 2012, 14:51 GMT

Mercedes Nico RosbergMercedes boss Ross Brawn is hopeful he can prove Lewis Hamilton wrong and give the Briton a car that is capable of fighting for victories in 2013.

Hamilton is leaving McLaren at the end of the year after a six-year spell at the Woking team to race alongside Nico Rosberg at Mercedes from next season.

The Briton admitted ahead of the season finale in Brazil that the Interlagos race may have been his last chance to win a race for a while given Mercedes's current form.

The Brackley-based outfit won the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this year but then struggled to keep up with its rivals and endured a five-race point-less streak in the championship run-in.

Despite that, Brawn believes Mercedes has all the ingredients to fight back and is not ruling out competing at the front.

"I hope so," Brawn said when asked by AUTOSPORT if Hamilton's predictions were too pessimistic.

"Obviously we're working very hard to give both him and Nico the opportunity to win and take pole positions. That's our ambition, our objective.

"It's obviously critical we improve from where we are. We're going to try [even] if we don't hit all our objectives next year. You never know what other people will do.

"I'd like to think we can do a few things of those things next year.

"I think Lewis was just playing things down. I'm sure in his heart he wants to win and set pole positions, but he understands the journey we've got to go on."

Lewis Hamilton Nico RosbergBrawn reckons the 2008 world champion's quality and input will also provide Mercedes with a significant boost.

"We're very excited about the prospect of working with Lewis," he said. "It's going to be very interesting for all of us. I'm sure he'll be different to Michael.

"The team are very excited that we're still able to have a driver of that calibre. As we get a stronger car, obviously the drivers will become even more critical for us."

Hamilton is under contract with McLaren until the end of the year, meaning he cannot start work with his new team until 2013.

Brawn is optimistic that such delays will not affect Hamilton's transition to his new environment, adding: "It's not a big problem.

"There are obviously things that you start to do. You start to build the relationship with the engineers, and that can start in earnest in January."

They are both leading contenders in the International Racing Driver of the Year category, although they also face competition from McLaren pair Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, plus comeback king Kimi Raikkonen.

WRC: Kubica would shine in WRC - Breen

By David Evans Sunday, December 2nd 2012, 13:45 GMT

Robert KubicaSuper 2000 World Rally champion and former WRC Academy title-winner Craig Breen has tipped Robert Kubica for the top in rallying, having competed against the Polish Formula 1 star on the Rallye du Var last week.

Citroen driver Kubica retired from the lead on the event, while Breen finished third in a Peugeot 207 S2000.

Breen's hopes of winning once Kubica had gone off the road were ruined by two punctures for the Irishman, but he admitted he had been hugely impressed with Kubica.

"He was amazing," Breen told Motorsport News. "He totally dominated the rally and was one of the most down to earth people I've ever met.

"He actually came up to me at the pre-event press conference and said congratulation on the SWRC title!

"It was absolutely humbling to have somebody like him, somebody from his background, come over to me.

"It would be fantastic to see him in rallying next season, he's got such speed - I think he opened everybody's eyes in France last week."

Kubica's two-event deal to drive a Citroen C4 WRC has now passed and the Pole's plans for next season are currently being discussed.

AUTOGP: Roda among Auto GP test additions

By Peter Mills Sunday, December 2nd 2012, 14:47 GMT

Andrea RodaAuto GP championship runner-up Virtuosi UK will test Formula 3 graduate Andrea Roda in next Thursday's two-day test at Barcelona.

Italian Roda brings three years of F3 experience from the Euro Series and Italian championship.

"We're very pleased that Andrea is on board, and we look forward to evaluating his skills," Virtuosi UK co-owner Declan Lohan told AUTOSPORT.

"After running Pal Varhaug to the runner-up place this year, there has been a lot of interest from drivers wanting to test with us for one day.

"But we preferred to have someone in the car for both days so that they can really learn the car, and we can get a clearer picture of their potential."

Antonio Spavone, who raced for Ombra and Euronova in Auto GP this year in parallel to a limited GP3 campaign, will sample Super Nova machinery during the test.

Bergamo-based Ombra will evaluate local driver Luca Defendi, a 19-year-old who graduates from Italian Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Abarth.

V8: Slade claims maiden V8 pole

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 01 Desember 2012 | 23.01

Saturday, December 1st 2012, 02:43 GMT

Tim Slade takes Sydney V8 poleTim Slade claimed his maiden V8 Supercars pole position in qualifying for race one of the 2012 season finale on Sydney's Homebush street circuit.

Rain showers in the provisional qualifying session meant a host of big names missed out on the top-10 shoot-out in the scramble for laptimes when the circuit was at its best.

Champion Jamie Whincup will start only 14th, two places ahead of his Triple 8 Holden team-mate Craig Lowndes, while erstwhile title contender Mark Winterbottom is back in 25th for Ford Performance Racing.

Winterbottom's team-mate Will Davison grabbed the fastest time in that session, but an error in the pole decider left him only second as Slade secured his first pole in the Rosenberg/Stone Brothers Ford.

The rest of the top 10 has a very unfamiliar look. Steven Johnson, Alexandre Premat and Michael Caruso complete the top five.

Shane van Gisbergen qualified eighth for his final race in the series. Van Gisbergen recently shocked the sport by announcing that he was not only leaving Stone Brothers at the end of the season, but walking away from V8s completely.

A loss of oil pressure meant Rick Kelly could not complete a shoot-out lap so he starts 10th.

V8: Lowndes wins wild first Sydney race

Saturday, December 1st 2012, 08:18 GMT

Craig Lowndes wins in SydneyCraig Lowndes denied Tim Slade victory in a wild first V8 Supercars race around Sydney's Homebush street track.

Amid extreme heat, multiple safety cars and plenty of incident, the event turned into a fuel economy run at the finish, with all the leaders nursing their cars to the flag.

Lowndes and Triple 8 team-mate Jamie Whincup had made rapid progress up the order from their 16th and 14th places on the grid.

When their final pitstops took place behind the safety car on lap 45 of 74, Whincup pulled over into a neutral area in the pitlane to allow Lowndes through to take his stop first. While Whincup has already secured the 2012 title, Lowndes is still in a close fight with Mark Winterbottom for the runner-up spot.

That put Lowndes in prime position to challenge polesitter Slade for the win, and he made it through on lap 62 when Slade made a small error.

Slade was able to retain second, winning a late battle with James Courtney as the former champion had to back off dramatically to save fuel.

Having volunteered to queue behind Lowndes in the pits, Whincup came home fifth behind Jonathon Webb, who came from 24th on the grid to fourth.

Winterbottom tried a slightly different strategy as he recovered from 25th on the grid and could only finish ninth, leaving him three points behind Lowndes going into Sunday's season finale.

Incidents included Shane van Gisbergen retiring after contact with both Tony d'Alberto and the series' medical car on lap one, and second-row starters Steven Johnson and Alexandre Premat retiring with electrical issues and heat exhaustion respectively.

WRC: Hanninen set for Ford WRC switch

By David Evans Saturday, December 1st 2012, 09:06 GMT

Juho HanninenJuho Hanninen is expected to tackle the first two rounds of next year's World Rally Championship in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta RS WRC after being released from his Skoda contract.

The 31-year-old Finn, who won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, Super 2000 WRC and European Rally Championship in a Fabia S2000 between 2010 and '12, was confirmed as a free agent by Skoda on Friday.

He will be replaced in the Czech Republic team by rising star Esapekka Lappi, who will tackle WRC-2 (the new name for SWRC) next year.

Skoda motorsport chief Michal Hrabanek said: "I'd like to thank Juho and [co-driver] Mikko [Markkula] for their excellent performances in Skoda Motorsport colours.

"We have made fantastic achievements together and have become the most successful crew in the entire history of the brand's motorsport efforts."

Hanninen added: "My goal has always been to drive and compete at the highest level and now there is the chance with M-Sport."

He will start next season with new co-driver Tomi Tuominen after his regular navigator Markkula joined Andreas Mikkelsen at Volkswagen.

Hanninen has tackled four world championship rounds in a World Rally Car before, his best result being eighth on Rally d'Italia in a Mitsubishi Lancer WRC in 2007.
