NAT: John Crossle obituary: 1931-2014

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 02 September 2014 | 23.01

By Richard Young Tuesday, September 2nd 2014, 14:38 GMT

John Crossle

John Crossle, who passed away last Sunday after a long illness, aged 82, left an indelible mark on motor racing in his native Northern Ireland and further afield.

Though he and his cars would achieve greatest prominence following the invention of Formula Ford, Crossle started in motorsport in the 1950s with a Ford-powered special that he successfully built and raced himself.

The unassuming Holywood man was soon asked for replicas, and he founded his Crossle Car Company in 1957.

His first efforts were front-engined 1172cc cars to comply with a local formula, before rear-engined examples appeared.

Throughout the 1960s the Crossle operation grew, with the production of the 5S, 7S and 9S sportscars.

The one-off 8F and 10F single-seaters with 4.7-litre Ford power held lap records at Kirkistown and Bishopscourt and the 12F won the 1968 SCCA Formula B run-offs in the hands of Roger Barr, establishing the marque's reputation in North America.

When Formula Ford was created, Crossle was quick to respond and his 16F proved immediately successful, a high point being Gerry Birrell's 1969 Euroseries title.

Further victories followed and the company scored a coup when Skip Barber equipped his US race schools with 30F and later 32F chassis.

Crossles gave several future F1 drivers their first single seater-experience, including Nigel Mansell, Eddie Irvine and John Watson.

There were other successes with F2 machinery, but Formula Ford remained the mainstay of Crossle production through the 1970s and '80s, joined by FF2000 - with the 31F winning the British championship in 1975 - and Super Vee variants.

Latterly, John's interests turned towards sporting trials and the Honda-powered 80T, before Crossle customer Arnie Black took control of the company in 2002 and began producing an updated version of the 9S.

Black passed the baton to Paul McMorran in 2012, but Crossle - who also served as a member of Kirkistown's 500 Motor Racing Club council - remained involved, while also devoting time to his collection of vintage agricultural machinery.

OTHER: Barbados to host Race of Champions

Tuesday, September 2nd 2014, 15:15 GMT

The 2014 Race of Champions will be held in Barbados at the recently renovated Bushy Park circuit, event organisers have announced.

The venue, which proved popular in a fan vote to help determine the location of this year's event, will be modified to incorporate the traditional head-to-head circuit layout for the RoC.

It means this year's event will be the first since 2003 not to be held inside a major sports stadium, with arenas such as the Stade de France, Wembley and Beijing's 'Bird's Nest' Olympic stadium hosting the RoC in recent years.

RoC organiser Fredrik Johnsson said: "The Bushy Park circuit was one of the most popular venues in our vote and we are very excited to be heading to Barbados for another festival of motorsport and entertainment.

"This marks a break from our last 10 years of stadium events but this is a throwback to our long-time home at Gran Canaria, which hosted RoC from 1992 to 2003.

"We will certainly return to stadium events in the future but for 2014 we will take advantage of the available space to build a truly spectacular parallel track at Bushy Park.

"We now look forward to seeing a packed house for a guaranteed weekend of thrills in December."

This year's Race of Champions will take place on December 13-14. Last year's event was cancelled due to political unrest in host country Thailand.

Gene Haas has changed the name of his planned Formula 1 team, as work continues to get the American outfit on to the grid in 2016.

F1: Honda open to customer teams in 2016

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 01 September 2014 | 23.01

Monday, September 1st 2014, 13:39 GMT

Honda motorsport boss Yasuhisa Arai, F1 2014

Honda is open to supplying customer teams in Formula 1 from 2016, after confirming its partnership with McLaren is exclusive for just one season.

The Japanese manufacturer is returning to F1 for the first time since 2008, having been attracted back thanks to the introduction of the new turbo V6 engines.

Honda's deal with McLaren has guaranteed the Woking-based team exclusivity of the power units for the first season, and its motorsport chief Yasuhisa Arai has clarified plans for 2016 and beyond.

"In 2015 we don't have the plan to supply any team other than McLaren," he said in an interview with the official F1 website.

"In 2016 or after, if some teams or partners ask us to supply them too, we will take a look at that situation.

"But even in 2016, McLaren will be our main partner in F1.

"And even if we supply other teams from 2016 onwards our main focus will always be to win - to make the engine better through more data - and not necessarily to look at a return on investment. If you win that comes automatically."

Arai is adamant that Honda's development plans for next year are on course, and that he fully expects it to be winning races from the off.

"Formula 1 is a very important part of our strategy - and winning is very important for Honda," he said.

"We want to raise the awareness of our brand and I trust - I am a firm believer - that we will win races next year."

NO PLANS FOR ABU DHABI TEST

McLaren had been looking at the possibility of giving the new Honda engine a first run in its car at the post-season Abu Dhabi test this year.

However, Arai says that there are no plans for it to hit the track until the first tests of next year.

"In the next couple of weeks we will run simulations and at the beginning of next year we will start to run on the track - very likely at Jerez," he said.

"That will very likely be the first time to show the whole car, the Honda engine and the McLaren chassis - the Honda McLaren.

"Right now there are no plans to collect data during the rest of 2014. Jerez will be the first time."

DTM: Paffett wants DTM format rethink

By Andrew van Leeuwen Monday, September 1st 2014, 13:18 GMT

DTM start, Nurburgring 2014

Gary Paffett wants a rethink of the DTM format and claims pit-window regulations are causing 'fabricated' races that invite penalties.

The current sporting regulations dictate that drivers must stop at least once during the race, and can only use the softer option tyre for 50 per cent of the distance.

Although this has produced some good races, 2005 champion Paffett argues that having a narrow pit-window and limited use of the softer tyre results in too many drivers pitting on the same lap, which prompts unsafe-release controversies.

"[At the Nurburgring] the option tyre was three seconds per lap quicker, so everybody was obviously going to use it for the maximum amount of time - so you have half the grid stopping one lap, and half the grid stopping two laps later," said Paffett.

"You don't want to pit on the same lap as another car, because you're going to lose time in the pitlane.

"But the problem is, you have to, or you'll lose seconds from being on the wrong tyre. They've forced us into this position with the rules.

"It's not dangerous for us, it's dangerous for our crews. That's who is in danger, real danger."

Paffett's suggestion is that the prime tyre should be abandoned, and the pit-window and mandatory stops abolished, with a single softer tyre and free strategy choice instead.

"What we don't want is fabricated races. That's what we've had for years," he said.

"If you just have the prime tyre, nobody will pit, because you could do the whole race.

"With the soft tyre, you could maybe do Norisring in one stop, and that's fair enough.

"At Zandvoort, you'd probably need to make two stops. But you need to have the choice. You've got to open the strategy.

"At the moment you can get rid of your strategists, because they don't have a job."

DTMDA TO PLAY A ROLE

Paffett believes the newly-formed DTM Drivers' Association, led by ex-racer Manuel Reuter, is the perfect opportunity to make a difference.

"Manuel has been invited to some more ITR meetings to look at the future, and look at next year, and we've been asked to come up with some ideas about how we feel the DTM should change," explained Paffett.

"We've still got work to do, but we're starting to get involved in the system, and I think we now have a bit of a voice and we can now be heard.

"It's not that we don't have good ideas, it's just that they've never had a way of hearing the ideas.

"We get to Hockenheim race one, and they go 'right, here's a new rule', and we say 'hang on, what about this' and they say 'oh yeah, we never thought about that'."

F1: Massa wants Williams brake change

By Ben Anderson Monday, September 1st 2014, 15:11 GMT

Felipe Massa, Williams, Belgian GP 2014, Spa

Felipe Massa has urged the Williams Formula 1 team to change its brake systems after struggling in wet qualifying at the recent Belgian Grand Prix.

Massa qualified a lowly ninth for the Spa event, on a track where Williams was expected to run at the front.

Massa was among a selection of drivers to suffer glazed brakes in the wet session, and he has called on his team to switch from its current Carbone Industrie-only set-up to allow its car to run Brembo pads and discs.

When asked whether he wanted to move to Brembo brakes, which the Brazilian used at his previous team Ferrari, Massa said: "Yes. It's not the first time we had [glazing] this year.

"Normally the brakes we used in the conditions like this, we had [glazing] a few times this year.

"It's not great to be honest, so it's something that we are still working on.

"It's impossible to warm up the [CI] brakes [in the wet]."

Williams performance chief Rob Smedley confirmed Williams was evaluating redesigning its car to accept both types of material, but said the FW36 was designed around using CI brakes, so any change would not be straightforward to make.

"You have to set out at the start of the year essentially with your mechanical fixing that fixes the brake disc to the car able to accept both," Smedley explained.

"If you haven't done that, then it's a very big change to make to the car. It's something you couldn't just do between sessions.

"We're going through the process now, but this team has been geared up to run with CI for many years now, so to change to another manufacturer is not wholly straightforward.

"With a certain amount of resource we have to consider where to put that resource the best. We can't put all of the company on to changing to Brembo material.

"We're considering the design and considering what to do for the future.

"For next year, that [a change to design of the mechanical fixing] will more than likely be the case."
