F1: Former GP promoter Gurdjian dies

By Jonathan Noble Saturday, August 30th 2014, 15:33 GMT

Philippe Gurdjian

Former French Grand Prix promoter Philippe Gurdjian, who also played an instrumental role in helping put Malaysian and Abu Dhabi on the Formula 1 calendar, has died aged 69.

The Frenchman, who competed several times at Le Mans in the 1970s and 1980s, first shot to prominence as the promoter of his home F1 GP.

He oversaw the race at Paul Ricard from 1985 and then in 1991 led the transfer of the event to Magny-Cours.

Gurdjian's success with the French GP led to him becoming one of Bernie Ecclestone's most trusted men, and he helped organise the Spanish GP for a while.

He was also called upon to ensure that efforts to bring the Malaysian and Abu Dhabi GPs on to the calendar were successful - and both have become established.

Gurdjian's biggest legacy will be helping to engineer the transformation of the Ricard circuit into a modern testing facility - although he never did see it secure an F1 race again.

It became a contender to host a Mediterranean GP back in 2006, and Gurdjian once famously suggested that an F1 race could even take place there exclusively for corporate guests, without any paying spectators.

McLaren racing director Eric Boullier, who became a friend of Gurdjian, was one of the first to pay tribute to him.

"On behalf of all at McLaren, I want to say how very sorry we all are to hear the sad news that Philippe Gurdjian has passed away," he said.

"As the French Grand Prix promoter for many years, when the race was at Magny-Cours, and latterly as the 'father' of the brilliantly revamped Paul Ricard circuit, he was a very important and highly influential figure in the story of motorsport in France.

"He was also a friend of mine, and a lovely man - wise, intelligent, friendly and amusing. I'll miss him.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and many friends today."

OTHER: Obituary: Martino Finotto 1933-2014

By Gary Watkins Thursday, August 14th 2014, 13:32 GMT

Martino Finotto, who has died at the age of 80 after a long battle with cancer, made his mark in our sport as a driver, a team owner and engine constructor.

The high point of the wealthy Italian's 20-year racing career came with victory in the 1979 European Touring Car Championship aboard a self-run BMW 3.0CSL entered under the Jolly Club banner. He claimed the title with long-time co-driver and business partner Carlo Facetti after winning five of the final six rounds.

Finotto, who won a total of 12 ETC races in 1977-79, had already contested the blue-riband 24-hour enduros at Le Mans and Daytona and turned his attention to sportscar racing after winning the touring car crown.

He raced a privateer Group 5 Lancia Beta Montecarlo in the 1980 World Championship for Makes and ran a Ferrari 308 GTB turbo, which was reputed to have 1000bhp in qualifying trim, alongside the Lancia the following season.

The Ferrari was developed by Finotto and Facetti's CARMA operation - the name of which was derived from the opening letters of their christian names - and this tiny organisation subsequently built a bespoke four-cylinder turbocharged engine for the new Group C Junior category for 1983.

Badged a Giannini after the Fiat special tuner because CARMA needed a manufacturer for homologation purposes, this engine claimed back-to-back World Endurance Championship titles in the secondary Group C category in 1983-84 together with Italian racing car constructor Alba.

Finotto took a total of four class victories in the first season sharing with Facetti.

Almo Coppelli, who drove for the CARMA Alba set-up in the second of those seasons and subsequently raced with Finotto in the US IMSA series, remembers a man who was at once passionate for motorsport and a hard taskmaster.

"Martino was driven by his passion, but he always gave me a hard time," says Coppelli.

"He and Facetti were old-school guys and really tough with me, but I learnt a lot - racing with them was part of my schooling.

"Facetti did everything in the team: he was the driver, the manager and the engineer. Finotto paid the bills, but we was a decent driver who was never far off the pace."

Finotto continued racing at the wheel of Albas for much of the 1980s before driving for other marques in the IMSA Camel Lights category through into the early 1990s.

He competed at Le Mans on six occasions without breaking into the top 10, but had a best finishes at Daytona of second in 1977 driving a Porsche 935 and a fifth in 1981 at the wheel of his Lancia.

Finotto, who made his fortune in the chemical industry, started racing in 1972 and briefly flirted with Formula 1.

He bought a pair of Brabham BT42s, but decided against racing them after a solitary test at Monza at the end of 1973.

Instead they were fielded by ex-Formula 3 star Jurg Dubler under the Scuderia Finotto banner for a number of drivers through the '74 season, though two-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Gerard Larrousse's start at the Belgian Grand Prix at Nivelles was the only time the team made it onto the grid.

Finotto continued to race into the 1990s, making his last sportscar appearance at the 1995 Sebring 12 Hours.

NASCAR: Stewart involved in fatal incident

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 10 Agustus 2014 | 23.01

Sunday, August 10th 2014, 08:26 GMT

NASCAR Sprint Cup frontrunner and team owner Tony Stewart was involved in a fatal incident during a sprint car race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park on Saturday night.

The three-time Cup champion collided with 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr, who exited his car and walked down the track gesticulating at Stewart during the subsequent yellow.

Ward was then struck by Stewart's car, sustaining fatal injuries.

A statement from the County of Ontario Sheriff's office described the incident:

"The driver of the car that spun exited the racecar and walked down the track onto the racing surface.

"Two racecars travelling in tandem approached as the driver continued down the track, gesturing to the two approaching cars.

"The first car swerved to avoid the driver out on the track.

"The second car, operated by Tony Stewart, struck the driver.

"The driver was treated by on-track medical staff and transported to FF Thompson Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 11.15pm.

"At this point, Mr Stewart has co-operated with the investigation, which is ongoing."

A statement from Stewart's Stewart-Haas team said:

"A tragic accident took place last night during a sprint car race in which Tony Stewart was participating. Tony was unhurt, but a fellow competitor lost his life.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We're still attempting to sort through all the details and we appreciate your understanding during this difficult time."

Stewart is among several NASCAR drivers who regularly compete in short oval events alongside their stock car campaigns.

His 2013 Cup season was cut short when he suffered a broken leg during a sprint car race at Southern Iowa Speedway last August.

The Cup series is racing at Watkins Glen this weekend, with Stewart having secured 13th in Saturday's qualifying session before travelling to the sprint car event that evening.

NASCAR: Stewart to miss race after fatality

Sunday, August 10th 2014, 14:30 GMT

Tony Stewart

Tony Stewart has withdrawn from the Watkins Glen NASCAR Sprint Cup race following his involvement in a fatal sprint car incident on Saturday night.

Kevin Ward Jr died after he was struck by Stewart's car during an event at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

The two drivers had collided on the previous lap, and 20-year-old Ward was on the track gesticulating at Stewart during the subsequent yellow when he was hit.

Despite initially indicating on Sunday morning that Stewart would race as planned in the day's Cup round, Stewart-Haas Racing vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli announced three hours before the start that the three-time series champion was pulling out of the race. Regan Smith will replace him.

"We were talking last night and through the night, and we gave Tony some time to sleep it," said Zipadelli.

"This morning he feels strongly that this is the right thing to do.

"We at Stewart-Haas Racing strongly support it and agree with it.

"It's a difficult time for all parties. There's not a lot we can do. The only thing we can do is what we feel is right."

Smith is currently second in the Nationwide Series and will be making his first Cup appearance of 2014.

The County of Ontario Sheriff's office said Stewart was co-operating fully with its investigation into Ward's death.

In an official statement, NASCAR backed Stewart's decision to miss the race.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and fellow competitors of Kevin Ward Jr," it said.

"We support Tony Stewart's decision to miss today's race and we will continue to respect the process and timeline of the local authorities and will continue to monitor this situation moving forward."

F1: Horner: Kvyat has been sensational

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 01 Agustus 2014 | 23.01

By Edd Straw Friday, August 1st 2014, 13:29 GMT

Daniil Kvyat, F1 2014

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has hailed Daniil Kvyat's Formula 1 rookie season as "sensational".

Kvyat was promoted from racing in GP3 and European F3 in 2013, with some question whether he was ready to make the step up.

But the 20-year-old - who won the GP3 title last year - scored points in his first two grands prix and has often been in the top 10 during his maiden season.

Horner believes Kvyat's form is testament to the strength of the Red Bull junior scheme.

"He has been sensational and has been the rookie of the season so far," Horner told AUTOSPORT.

"His raw pace and speed, considering the jump he has made from GP3, is hugely impressive.

"He had little pre-season testing and Jean-Eric [Vergne] is a very quick driver, so the benchmark he's up against is good as well.

"And we have got some great talent coming on beneath that with Carlos Sainz Jr, Pierre Gasly and Alex Lynn, so there is some very positive talent on the junior programme."

The Red Bull junior programme has been criticised in some quarters for its ruthlessness.

Sebastian Buemi, Jaime Alguersuari, Christian Klien and Vitantonio Liuzzi have all been axed from Red Bull's F1 programmes in the past.

But Horner believes the success of Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo in his team shows how effective the scheme is.

"Both of our race drivers have come through the junior team and they are both there on merit," said Horner.

"The junior programme can be perceived as tough at times, but F1 is not a soft business and you get found out in the end.

"The great thing about the Red Bull programme is that if the guys are seriously talented, they find their way and they are supported."

AUTOSPORT SAYS...
Edd Straw, Grand Prix Editor (@eddstrawF1)

On the face of it, Christian Horner talking up a Red Bull junior should be no surprise, but the glowing praise he has heaped on Daniil Kvyat is merited.

The Russian had to take a giant leap to move from F3/GP3-level into F1 and with Toro Rosso's troubled pre-season testing offering relatively little time for him to hone his skills, it was in at the deep end.

Daniil Kvyat, F1 2014

His results, four top 10 finishes and five Q3 appearances, would have been even better but for the Italian team's reliability record.

Kvyat has also shown well relative to Jean-Eric Vergne, who is also having a good season after improving his mental approach.

But what is really impressive about Kvyat is his mature attitude. He speaks like someone who has been knocking around in F1 for five years and, crucially, is always focused on areas where he can improve rather than talking up his own performances.

That allows him to improve consistently and learn from when things have gone wrong.

It also justifies Helmut Marko's claim last year that it was the constructive way Kvyat responded to things going badly that earned him the nod over other candidates from the Red Bull stable.

It's still early days for Kvyat, but Horner has rightly recognised him as a driver who has the potential to race for his team in the future.

F3: Giovinazzi surprises in Austria

By Marcus Simmons Friday, August 1st 2014, 13:46 GMT

Antonio Giovinazzi, Carlin, Red Bull Ring

Antonio Giovinazzi topped both free practice sessions for this weekend's Formula 3 European Championship round at the Red Bull Ring.

The Carlin-run Jagonya Ayam protege bounced back from a recent run of poor results to head championship leader Esteban Ocon by just under a tenth of a second in his Dallara-Volkswagen.

Lotus F1 junior Ocon can theoretically wrap up the championship this weekend in Austria, in the unlikely event of his outscoring closest rival Max Verstappen by 60 points across the three races, and the Frenchman was always towards the front in his Prema Powerteam Dallara-Mercedes.

Jake Dennis proved the strength of the Carlin package on this circuit, the Racing Steps-backed Brit going second in the opening 40-minute session and running Ocon very close in the second period.

So too did team-mates Jordan King and Tom Blomqvist, who ended the running fourth and sixth respectively.

Verstappen squeezed himself between the Carlin flotilla, the Dutchman going fifth quickest in his Van Amersfoort Racing Dallara-VW.

Prema also looks strong, with Dennis van de Laar and Antonio Fuoco backing up Ocon with seventh and eighth fastest times respectively.

Ed Jones made his Euro F3 return from injury - after warming up with a triple win last weekend at Spa in British F3 - to make it five Carlin runners in the top nine, while home hero Lucas Auer (although the Norisring is actually closer to his Kufstein home) rounded out the top 10 in his Mucke Motorsport Dallara-Merc.

Sandro Zeller parked his car early with a rough-sounding engine, while John Bryant-Meisner has started the weekend with a new Mercedes powerplant in his Fortec Motorsport car, and will take a trio of 10-place grid penalties as a result.

As predicted by AUTOSPORT, GP3 regular Alfonso Celis Jr is standing in for this round in the other Fortec car in place of Mitch Gilbert, who has quit the series.

Double R Racing is not at the Red Bull Ring as it was unable to find a replacement for Felipe Guimaraes.

INDY: Hunter-Reay leads Mid-Ohio practice

Ryan Hunter-Reay set the pace in the opening practice session for this weekend's IndyCar round at Mid-Ohio.

The Andretti Autosport driver waited until his final lap to post a fastest time of 1m06.5316s, beating Simon Pagenaud's previous benchmark by 0.1415 seconds.

Scott Dixon waited longer than any other driver to emerge from the pitlane, the reigning champion making his first appearance with around 10 minutes left on the clock, but that was still enough time for him to finish the morning third-fastest.

Mikhail Aleshin and Sebastien Bourdais rounded out the top five on a morning notable mostly for how little running most of the drivers completed. In a 45 minute session, only Bourdais and Graham Rahal registered 20 or more laps.

The limited running was likely a side-effect of the fact that Firestone has only allocated five sets of tyres to each car for the weekend instead of six, which was the previous norm for events that have three practice sessions.
