INDY: Gary Bettenhausen dies aged 72

Monday, March 17th 2014, 15:40 GMT

Gary Bettenhausen

Gary Bettenhausen, a 25-time Indianapolis 500 participant and a member of one of US single-seater racing's prominent families, has died in Indiana at the age of 72.

Bettenhausen, son of 1940s and '50s racing great Tony, was a regular at the 500 between 1968 and '94, qualifying for the race on all but five occasions.

He never managed to win, although he made a place for himself in the event's history books by becoming one of the small club of drivers to have set the fastest qualifying time for the race without starting from pole.

In Bettenhausen's case, it happened in 1991, 30 years to the day after his father was killed at the same track. His 224.468mph effort was better than Rick Mears' 224.113mph pole time, but came 24 hours too late.

His brother Tony Jr, who also raced and owned a CART team, observed at the time that "it was typical Bettenhausen luck. High speed. Wrong day."

Bettenhausen's best result at Indy came in 1980, when he raced through the field from 32nd on the grid to finish third, although he led for 138 laps in 1972 before dropping out with an ignition failure.

In addition to his IndyCar exploits, Bettenhausen also dabbled in NASCAR and made eight Winston Cup starts; a dalliance that resulted in four top-10 finishes and a best result of fourth at Michigan in 1974.

Tony Jr was killed in a plane crash in 2000, while another brother, Merle, was badly injured in his only Champ Car start at Michigan in 1972.

F1: Rosberg still has reliability worries

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 02 Maret 2014 | 23.01

By Ben Anderson Sunday, March 2nd 2014, 10:15 GMT

Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, Bahrain F1 testing, February 2014

Nico Rosberg says Mercedes is still worried about the reliability of its new Formula 1 car as pre-season testing draws to a close.

Mercedes has generally led the way in terms of mileage and laptime so far, but the W05 has suffered several niggling reliability issues along the way.

The team undertook what it described as a "precautionary" engine change before Saturday's test at the Sakhir circuit, which delayed Rosberg's final day of running, and then missed the first three hours on Sunday due to gearbox issues.

Rosberg went on to clock more than 100 laps and set the second fastest time of the test on Saturday, but the three-time grand prix winner feels Mercedes still has some bugs to iron out before the first race in Melbourne.

"We've had some good tests but reliability is still a concern for us as it is for everybody else," said Rosberg. "It's tough to get the car 100 per cent ready.

"We might be in a better position than some other teams but we need to get to the end of the race so that's a big challenge."

The German was satisfied with his last day of testing overall, despite some weather issues and his loss of track time.

"Conditions were tough out there with a sandstorm and really strong winds, which made it difficult to learn a lot, but it was still a good day," said Rosberg.

F1: Hamilton ends testing on top

By Ben Anderson Sunday, March 2nd 2014, 15:05 GMT

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, Bahrain F1 test, February 2014

Lewis Hamilton returned Mercedes to the top of the times while Red Bull's struggles continued during the final pre-season Formula 1 test of 2014 in Bahrain.

The 2008 world champion made a late start, after losing most of the morning to a gearbox issue on the W05, but worked his way to the top of the times as the afternoon progressed.

He fell just 0.02 seconds short of beating Felipe Massa's Sakhir circuit pre-season benchmark from Saturday's test and bumped Massa's Williams team-mate Valtteri Bottas from the top spot, after the Finn had led the way for most of the day before stopping on the start-finish straight with a mechanical issue.

Sebastian Vettel endured another frustrating day in Red Bull's RB10, suffering what the team described as "a mechanical issue at the front of the car", which pitched the world champion off at Turn 1 before lunch.

The German returned to the track in the afternoon, and racked up a total of 77 laps, but at reduced pace.

He wound up ninth fastest thanks to late improvements under the floodlights, but still over four seconds off Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso set Ferrari's fastest time of pre-season around the Sakhir circuit to go third fastest, after the F14 T caused one of eight red flags across the day when Alonso stopped at Turn 12.

Romain Grosjean's Lotus, Jenson Button's McLaren, and Nico Hulkenberg's Force India all suffered engine failures that curtailed their running early, while clutch issues forced Kamui Kobayashi's Caterham to stop prematurely too.

Jean-Eric Vergne enjoyed arguably Toro Rosso's most successful day of pre-season, clocking 74 laps and the fifth fastest time.

Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutierrez split driving duties in the Sauber and racked up more laps between them (177) than anyone else.

Electrical dramas delayed Max Chilton, but the Brit made a late surge to seventh on the timesheet, splitting the Sauber drivers with Marussia's fastest lap of pre-season around this track.

F1: Lotus needs luck to finish Oz GP

By Glenn Freeman and Matt Beer Sunday, March 2nd 2014, 15:34 GMT

Lotus believes it will need luck on its side just to finish the Australian Grand Prix after its troubled build-up to the 2014 Formula 1 season.

The team had to miss the first test at Jerez completely, and has only managed 1288 kilometres of running across the Bahrain fortnight, amid the litany of technical problems afflicting all Renault teams.

Asked what Lotus's chances of finishing the Australian GP were, technical director Nick Chester replied: "I think we've got to have a few things align.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes end winter on top

"We've had days when the power unit has been fine and something else has let us down.

"I think we're going to need a bit of luck and all the bits to line up right for us.

"I know Renault Sport are working very hard on fixes and I'm sure they'll be bringing fixes and new specs to Melbourne that hopefully will give us a much better chance."

Chester admitted that not all the problems were Renault's responsibility.

Bahrain F1 testing gallery

"Most of the issues that have stopped us this week have been on the power unit side but we have had a couple of issues on our side," he said.

"We had some exhaust failures earlier in the week. We think we understand them now. We've got a different spec of exhaust coming for Melbourne and we think we know why they were cracking. It was one of our parts, we still make the whole system."

Romain Grosjean could only complete 65 laps across his two days of Bahrain running this week.

"We did as much as we could from the little amount of running that we had," said Grosjean.

While he admitted that the sole reason he thought he might finish in Melbourne was "optimism", the Frenchman insisted Lotus had managed to make some progress.

"Every time we stopped we tried to improve and there are things that went in the right direction, which is nice.

"I think it's even more complicated than everyone thought with this power unit and there is a lot of work on our side and the Renault side.

"It's far from being ideal or good. We tried to get every opportunity on track to improve what we could and understand the brake-by-wire, this new power unit and the management of the charge.

"There are two weeks before Australia and hopefully there's some brightness in the future."

MOTOGP: Camier loses Ioda MotoGP ride

Written By kolimtiga on Sabtu, 01 Maret 2014 | 23.01

Saturday, March 1st 2014, 12:05 GMT

Leon Camier

British rider Leon Camier is set to lose his planned Ioda MotoGP seat before the season even starts.

The 27-year-old was listed on a second Aprilia for Ioda in January.

But amid rumours of financial problems, the team did not make it to either of the first two pre-season tests in Malaysia.

An updated entry list was released on Friday featuring only a single Ioda entry for team regular Danilo Petrucci.

The team subsequently issued a statement confirming that it would start the season with just Petrucci.

Ioda boss Giampiero Sacchi said the intention was still to add a second bike for Camier at a later stage if possible.

"Our priority is to start working with Aprilia for the development of the bike according to the steps that we have set," he said.

"We are still working to be able to line up a second MotoGP [entry] during the season."

Camier won the 2009 British Superbike title before graduating to the world championship, most recently racing for Suzuki.

The original 2014 MotoGP entry list featured Niccolo Canepa as Ioda's second rider, but its release was followed by statements from both Canepa and the team denying a deal had been done, with Camier then replacing him in the provisional line-up.

The team is switching to Open class Aprilia machinery this year after racing the Suter-BMW package in 2013.

F1: Massa sets new Bahrain test benchmark

By Glenn Freeman Saturday, March 1st 2014, 14:37 GMT

Felipe Massa, Williams, Bahrain F1 testing, February 2014

Felipe Massa set the fastest time of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain so far on Saturday, as Sebastian Vettel failed to complete a lap for Red Bull.

Williams focused on performance work for Massa's final day in the car before the Australian Grand Prix weekend, and late in the afternoon the Brazilian set the quickest time over the two tests at Sakhir this pre-season.

Nico Rosberg - who completed 103 laps despite losing most of the morning due to an engine change - briefly stole top spot from Massa with around 15 minutes to go, but the Williams went back out and beat his time by 0.2 seconds.

At the other end of the timing screens sat world champion Vettel, who took over from Daniel Ricciardo following Red Bull's best day of pre-season so far.

However, there was no continuation of that momentum for Vettel, who stopped halfway round his out-lap after waiting nearly three hours to head out of the garage for the first time.

The RB10 was sent out again before lunch, but this time it only made it to the end of the pitlane before Vettel stopped and had to push the car back.

After that the Red Bull mechanics closed the garage doors, and the car did not reappear.

Sauber and Lotus were the other teams in trouble. The Swiss team managed one lap before Adrian Sutil pulled to a stop at the pit entry with smoke coming out of the C33, requiring an engine change that could not be completed in time for him to run again.

Romain Grosjean was back in the Lotus for the first time at this final test, and after electrical problems prevented him from running in the morning, his day ended after just 33 laps with an MGU-K problem that was too big to fix before the end of the running.

In terms of race simulations, Force India followed its programme from the past two days with Sergio Perez, giving Nico Hulkenberg set-up work to do in the morning before a race run in the afternoon.

Ferrari had a quiet morning on Kimi Raikkonen's final day in the car, and it finally managed to carry out some race simulation work with the Finn in the final two hours of the day.

That left just enough time for some short runs just before the end, which enabled the 2007 world champion to set the third-fastest time.

F1: Vettel not 'emotional' about issues

By Edd Straw and Matt Beer Saturday, March 1st 2014, 15:34 GMT

Sebastian Vettel says he will not let himself get 'emotional' about Red Bull's plight in 2014 pre-season Formula 1 testing.

The world champion missed out on another day of running in Bahrain on Saturday when electrical and battery issues with the RB10 meant he first stopped on an installation lap, then failed to get out of the pitlane when Red Bull made a second attempt to begin its programme.

Vettel's problems came after Red Bull managed an encouraging 66 laps with his new team-mate Daniel Ricciardo on Friday.

Bahrain test day three report

"We thought we would be in a much better place this week compared to last week. That hasn't really been the case," said Vettel.

"There's no point being too emotional at this stage. We really have to take it step by step.

"We know how serious it is, especially inside the team - on Renault's side and our side. We've been a team the last five years and things have been fantastic.

"There were difficult days and difficult times - when we had the engine blow up with two races to go [in 2010], nearly deciding the championship, which wasn't great. There were other faults on our side, and on the driver's side. We are a team. These things happen.

"There's no reason to paint everything black. We know that it's a difficult time but everyone is aware of that and motivated to get out of it, get going and find out where we are."

F1 testing in pictures

Red Bull's problems have been exacerbated by the second and third tests taking place back to back so far from the team's European base, reckons Vettel, giving it little chance to recover from earlier faults.

"I think some things will calm down just by the fact that in two weeks' time we'll have lots of new parts," he said.

"Obviously we've had quite a lot of problems and therefore damaged quite a lot of parts which are not available overnight, and also we are in Bahrain so it's not that easy to fix things. That will get better once we get to Australia."

He also believes the RB10 has decent potential when it is able to run cleanly. "With the very, very few laps we did, the car felt good," said Vettel.

"I was very happy with the car. "Obviously it's a step back from last year in terms of overall grip, but it wasn't too bad.

"There's hope on that front."
