F1: Schumacher's condition improves

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 31 Desember 2013 | 23.01

Tuesday, December 31st 2013, 10:35 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher's condition has shown a slight improvement, but the seven times Formula 1 world champion remains in an induced coma in a critical condition.

Schumacher underwent a second operation overnight to remove another haematoma, which has helped to reduce the inter-cranial pressure he sustained in a skiing accident on Sunday.

The second procedure took place at 10pm on Monday night after examinations revealed an unexpected improvement in the 44-year-old's condition.

This allowed the medical team in the Grenoble hospital to access a large haematoma on the left side of his brain.

Dr Emmanual Gay said: "There was one haematoma that was larger and more accessible, so we were able to get rid of it without any risk.

"Thanks to that we were better able to control inter-cranial pressure. There's still a lot of haemorrhaging."

The medical team said that there remained a number of lesions on Schumacher's brain and that it is still impossible to make any prognosis about his future recovery.

They confirmed that Schumacher will remain in a coma for as long as is necessary, but that he is in a more stable condition than had been the case during the previous 24 hours.

"We have a strategy to correct a number of anomalies that continue and we want to give ourself some time during this phase of stability," said Professor Jean-Francois Payen.

"There are some important matters we need to think about for the future."

Schumacher's family were consulted before the second operation and remain by his bedside.

F1: Speed not a factor in Schumacher fall

Tuesday, December 31st 2013, 13:22 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher was not skiing at high speed when he fell and hit a rock, according to his official spokesperson Sabine Kehm.

Although Kehm was not present at the ski trip in Meribel, after speaking to other members of Schumacher's skiing party, she believes that the accident on Sunday happened at low speed.

"Michael and the group have been skiing on normal slopes," she said

"In between red and blue slopes there was an area and they went into that.

"He helped a friend who had fallen and went into deep snow, hit a rock and was catapulted into the air and landed head down.

"It was extreme bad luck, not because he was at speed."

Schumacher remains in an induced coma in Grenoble hospital, although there has been a slight improvement in his condition overnight.

The surgeons who have attended to him believe that had he not been wearing a ski helmet he would not have survived the fall.

F1: Ski helmet protected Schumacher

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 30 Desember 2013 | 23.01

By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 30th 2013, 11:04 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012Michael Schumacher would not have made it to hospital after his skiing accident if he had not been wearing a helmet, doctors have revealed.

The seven-time world champion remains in a critical condition in a French hospital after hitting his head during a fall on Sunday.

Although he has suffered severe injuries, the medical team looking after the German said during a press conference on Monday that the incident would likely have been fatal if he had not worn head protection.

Professor Jean-Francois Payen from the Grenoble hospital said: "We believe that taking into consideration the very violent shock, his helmet did protect him of course.

"Somebody having this kind of accident without the helmet would not have got to here."

Payen added that judging by the extent of the injuries that Schumacher suffered, it was clear his impact with rocks had not been at slow speed.

"Taking into consideration what we have observed, that despite a helmet he arrived with lesions that were quite severe, the shock must have taken place at high speed."

Professor Stephan Chabardes said that the injuries suggested that Schumacher had hit the rocks with the right hand side of his head.

"I did tell you there were a number of serious lesions, but I am not going to tell you any details," he said.

"The impact was on the right side - he fell on his side.

"At the time of the accident he was agitated, but not responding to questions.

"He did not have a normal neurological reaction."

F1: Moss's manager Ken Gregory dies

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 01 Desember 2013 | 23.01

Sunday, December 1st 2013, 12:29 GMT

Stirling Moss, 1949

Ken Gregory, best known as the manager of Stirling Moss, has died.

After serving in the Second World War, Gregory joined the RAC's competitions department in 1949, which served as his introduction to motorsport.

He quickly became heavily involved in the thriving 500cc racing scene, in which Moss was establishing himself (pictured), and Gregory became his business manager.

Gregory played a key role in Moss's move to Mercedes for the 1955 season, which allowed his charge to emerge as a genuine Formula 1 star, winning the British Grand Prix and finishing second in the world championship having previously had only one third place at that level.

Moss was not initially keen on the move, given his publicly-stated commitment to winning the title in a British car and with potentially clashing commercial deals agreed, not to mention Maserati's disputed claim that it had an agreement with him for '55. But Gregory secured a lucrative deal that would put Britain's leading driver in a top car.

Gregory's contribution to motor racing stretched far beyond simply managing Moss. He also managed Peter Collins, who won three world championship grands prix driving for Ferrari before his death at the Nurburgring in 1958.

Beyond that, he organised the first car racing meeting at Brands Hatch, previously used only for two-wheel racing, in 1950 and formed the British Racing Partnership with Moss's father, Alfred, in 1957.

BRP, which raced at world championship level from 1958-1964, the final two years as a constructor in its own right, only achieved patchy results. Second place for Moss driving a BRP-entered BRM in the '58 British GP was the highlight, although the team did win at non-championship level.

Innes Ireland, BRP, 1963 French GP

It also gave opportunities to a number of British talents, including Ivor Bueb, Chris Bristow, Cliff Allison, Henry Taylor and Team Lotus refugee Innes Ireland (pictured) as well as the very occasional outing for Moss.

BRP also fielded several non-British drivers, including Hans Herrmann, Lucien Bianchi, Masten Gregory and Jim Hall. Well-regarded American, Harry Schell, was signed up for 1960 but was killed when he crashed a BRP-entered Cooper in practice for that season's International Trophy at Silverstone.

The team dropped out of grand prix racing in 1965 after it was not granted membership of the F1 constructors' association. This was ostensibly because of question marks over whether it manufactured enough of its own parts.

Following a brief dalliance with the Indianapolis 500, BRP closed down after aspirations to return to F1 failed.

Gregory was also a credible driver in his own right, achieving some success in 500cc racing although this was always on an informal basis squeezed between his other commitments.

His racing exploits included outings in machinery produced by Kieft, of which Gregory was a director.

He later became involved in running charter aircraft and in publishing, notably starting up Cars and Car Conversions magazine.

F1: Rivalries resume at AUTOSPORT Awards

Sunday, December 1st 2013, 10:17 GMT

AUTOSPORT Awards

Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen will renew their rivalries at tonight's AUTOSPORT Awards in association with Mercedes-Benz.

The quartet, who collectively boast eight Formula 1 world championships, are leading contenders for the International Racing Driver of the Year Award.

They face competition from three-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon and six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

Vettel won last year's title, and has been irrepressible in 2013, breaking numerous records en route to a fourth F1 crown.

Alonso, Hamilton and Raikkonen meanwhile have all triumphed this year, finishing second, fourth and fifth respectively in the championship.

AUTOSPORT Live will cover the Awards as they happen from 10pm UK time on Sunday night.

The AUTOSPORT.com Rookie of the Year award also pitches F1 talent against each other, with top newcomers Valtteri Bottas, Jules Bianchi, Max Chilton and Esteban Gutierrez all shortlisted.

McLaren junior and Formula Renault 3.5 runner-up Stoffel Vandoorne and British Touring Car race-winner Sam Tordoff are also up for the award.

Other categories include International Racing Car of the Year, International Rally Driver of the Year and Rally Car of the Year.

The evening ends with the announcement of the winner of this year's McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award, which will involve one of six young British drivers receiving a McLaren F1 test and a £100,000 prize.

AWARD: Award finalists await their big night

Sunday, December 1st 2013, 10:22 GMT

McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award 2013

Young Brits Jack Aitken, Jake Hughes, Chris Middlehurst, Seb Morris, Matt Parry and Charlie Robertson are poised to discover which of them has won the 2013 McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award.

The announcement of the 25th winner will be made at tonight's AUTOSPORT Awards, in association with Mercedes-Benz, in London.

The victor will join the likes of David Coulthard, Dario Franchitti, Jenson Button, Gary Paffett and Paul di Resta on the roll of honour of past winners of the prestigious award.

AUTOSPORT Live will cover the Awards as they happen from 10pm UK time on Sunday night.

They will receive a cash prize of £100,000 as well as the traditional McLaren Formula 1 test, plus full BRDC membership and an AraiGP-6 RC carbon helmet.

The six finalists were given runs in Formula 2, Mercedes DTM and McLaren GT3 machinery at Silverstone in October.

Their performances were assessed by a panel of judges that included ex-F1 racer Derek Warwick, double British Touring Car champion Jason Plato, former GT ace Andrew Kirkaldy, McLaren head of vehicle engineering Mark Williams, leading commentator Ian Titchmarsh and AUTOSPORT's Kevin Turner.

Three of the finalists won championships in 2013. Hughes defeated Morris and Robertson to the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 title, Parry beat Aitken to win the Formula Renault NEC crown, and Middlehurst topped Formula Renault BARC.

All are Award finalists for the first time.
