RALLYX: Bakkerud wins, Loeb out in semi

Andreas Bakkerud, European Rallycross Loheac 2013

Andreas Bakkerud stormed to victory at round seven of the European Rallycross Championship at Loheac, France, while Sebastien Loeb just missed out on reaching the final.

It was the second win in a row for young Norwegian Bakkerud, who won last time out in Sweden.

Bakkerud lined up on the front row of the grid having won his semi-final, alongside Petter Solberg.

Solberg made the best start, and led into the first corner, just ahead of Bakkerud.

Tanner Foust, Davy Jeanney and Timur Timerzyanov battled for fourth position, which became a fight for third when French driver Jeanney took his joker on the first lap.

Bakkerud made a move past Solberg on lap two to take the lead, but ran deep, allowing Solberg back in front.

Bakkerud repeated his move on Solberg on the third lap, and this time made it stick to claim the lead, which he never gave up, taking his joker towards the end and returning in front.

Timerzyanov jokered on the second lap, while Foust took on the fifth lap, coming out just ahead of Timerzyanov. The two then made contact into the next corner; Foust ending up in the wall as a result.

Bakkerud continued to pull a lead, clear by almost two seconds as he crossed the finish line to take the win ahead of Solberg and the ever consistent Jeanney.

Sebastien Loeb

Timerzyanov came home fourth with Gaetan Serazin fifth and Foust managing to bring his car home in sixth.

Loeb finished fourth in his semi-final, just four tenths of a second behind Timerzyanov and a place in the final.

Kris Meeke was classified 18th and did not make it to the semi-final stages.

Fast all weekend, the Brit picked up a puncture in heat two and a disqualification for rough driving in heat three.

ERC: Kopecky clinches dominant home win

By Dan Cross Sunday, September 1st 2013, 13:05 GMT

Jan Kopecky, Skoda, Zlin ERC 2013

Jan Kopecky further extended his lead in the European Rally Championship after a commanding performance on home soil in the Czech Republic.

The Skoda driver gained an early advantage by winning Friday evening's superspecial event around the streets of the host city Zlin before stretching his overnight lead with a faultless run through all of Saturday's stages.

The gap to the chasing group was 37.5 seconds as the final day of competition got underway when his undefeated streak came to an end after he adopted a cautious approach through the morning stages - which were blighted by muddy corners following an overnight downpour.

He continued in this tentative manner through the afternoon to win the event by 1m01.6s despite not winning a stage on the final day.

Fellow countryman Vaclav Pech claimed second place in his Mini. The current Czech Championship leader was rewarded for his consistency and ability to remain out of harm's way.

Behind him for the majority of the rally was Roman Kresta, who had enjoyed a relatively comfortable ride in the final podium position in his self-run Skoda before suffering a puncture through the first pass of Jankovice on Sunday morning.

The three minutes he lost dropped him down to fifth overall and promoted team-mate Jarmoir Tarabus - who also encountered a puncture on the same stage - up into third position.

Tarabus had threatened to enter the top three early on in the event, but was handed a one-minute penalty for entering service ahead of schedule before the start of the sixth stage.

He eventually clawed his way back up the order with a succession of quick times through Saturday afternoon's stages and finished the day in fourth after displacing Skoda works driver Sepp Wiegand on day's final test through Pindula.

Tomas Kostka, Rufa Ford, ERC Zlin 2013

The pair were initially embroiled in a battle for third during the opening loop of stages on Sunday, but Tarabus found form in the final trio of tests and pulled away from his German rival by finishing 31.6s ahead of him.

The event also marked the competitive debut of the Ford Fiesta R5 in the ERC, but hopes for local hero Tomas Kostka to reach the podium once again came to a halt on the first pass through Pindula on Saturday when he suffered a broken differential that led to his retirement.

Fellow R5 runner Pavel Vaolusek fared better and underlined the new-generation car's pace by making series history with a stage win on the first run through Jankovice on the final day.

SSTARS: Morbidelli defeats title rival Biagi

By Andrew van Leeuwen Sunday, September 1st 2013, 15:13 GMT
Gianni Morbidelli, Audi Italia, Donington Superstars 2013

Gianni Morbidelli and Thomas Biagi are now tied on points in the Superstars International Series, after the pair finished first and second respectively in race two at Donington Park.

Biagi (Romeo Ferraris Mercedes) and Morbidelli (Audi Sport Italia RS5) started the race on the third row, both making flying starts to be first and second, Biagi leading Morbidelli, by halfway through the first lap.

While Biagi was able to hold off Morbidelli in the early stages of the race, the ex-Formula 1 driver upped the ante with 15 minutes to go.

A couple of minutes later Biagi finally caved under the pressure, running wide at the Melbourne hairpin, and giving Morbidelli a chance to get alongside down the front straight.

Despite the Audi carrying more weight than the Mercedes, Morbidelli was able to make his move stick into Redgate, and immediately set about opening a gap. Within a lap it was 0.8 seconds, and by the end of the race it was a whopping 8.5s between first and second.

While Biagi was not able to win, he was able to set the fastest lap, earning a crucial point that leaves he and Morbidelli tied on 173 points apiece with four races left.

Behind the front two, Max Mugelli led home a Dinamic BMW 3-4-5 from Giovanni Berton and Mauro Trentin.

Briton Colin Turkington made it four BMWs in a row, finishing a fine sixth in the Scuderia Giudici entry.

Tonio Liuzzi did not even make the start of the race, the ex-Red Bull Racing driver peeling into the pitlane at the end of the formation lap, his Romeo Ferraris Mercedes suffering from what the team believes to be a gearbox problem.

And he was not the only Mercedes driver to have troubles. Race one winner Luigi Ferrara looked on for another top four result, only to retire just after half-race distance with his second water pump failure of the weekend.
