WRC: Meeke/Novikov incident investigated

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 02 Agustus 2013 | 23.01

By David Evans Friday, August 2nd 2013, 13:49 GMT

Kris Meeke WRC 2013Rally Finland officials are examining footage from the incident involving Kris Meeke and Evgeny Novikov on the second stage this morning.

The Russian driver pulled out onto the road in front of Meeke after crashing into a pile of logs on the Palsankyla stage.

Meeke then followed him for six miles before the heavily damaged Fiesta pulled over a corner from the finish.

The Qatar M-Sport team had instructed Novikov to pull over as soon as Meeke arrived on his tail.

The windscreen on Meeke's DS3 WRC had been peppered with stones and the lack of visibility forced him off the road and caused him to get a front-left puncture.

The Northern Irish driver was livid with Novikov and spoke to him at the end of the stage.

"I just asked him what he thought he was at," said Meeke. "You know, we're not playing out here and he's not a little boy.

"I think he really needs to learn some lessons."

Novikov said he didn't receive the instruction to pull over until the end of the stage.

"When I got the message," he said, "I pulled over straight away.

"I think the message was a bit too late and I am sorry about that.

"I spoke with Kris and told him I was sorry, but I couldn't see what was behind me because I had no time for the mirrors when I was trying to see through the smashed windscreen."

Meeke dropped around half a minute in the stage and this time could be credited back to him if the rally officials feel he was seriously impeded.

Qatar M-Sport team principal Malcolm Wilson apologised to Meeke and the Citroen team, but Yves Matton said: "We have no problem, this is not a team thing. But I think the driver needs educating..."

Meeke injured his finger while changing the puncture after the stage, but the Citroen medics sorted that out at lunchtime service.

INDY: Filippi gets Herta nod for Mid-Ohio

By Mark Glendenning Friday, August 2nd 2013, 14:26 GMT

Luca FilippiLuca Filippi will make his IndyCar debut at Mid-Ohio this weekend with Bryan Herta Autosport, following on from his successful test with the team two days ago.

The Italian will replace Alex Tagliani, who has stood down from his seat by mutual agreement with the team as it works to reverse the poor results that have dogged it for much of the season.

Team owner Bryan Herta said that Filippi's feedback during his test convinced him that it was worth giving the 27-year-old an opportunity to race.

"Luca did a really good job during the test on Wednesday," Herta said. "We were very impressed with his quick adaptation to both a car and circuit that were completely new to him. We are all very excited to see how he does under race conditions."

Filippi said that he is looking forward to finally making his IndyCar debut after plans to run with Rahal Letterman Lanigan last year were thwarted by a last-minute sponsorship problem.

"I'm very grateful to BHA for this great opportunity because this is what I've been waiting for my whole life," he said.

"I'm really looking forward to the weekend. It was very good that we had an open test and I had a chance to work with the crew and engineers. I think we worked well together and they really looked after me.

"I like the Mid-Ohio circuit and the drivability of the car. I had a lot of fun at the test and we still have more time today to make improvements to get ready for tomorrow.

"Obviously I'm a rookie but I'm a racer and I'm competitive. I really want to do well and show that even though I have a different background, I can prove my abilities."

Filippi is best-known for his long and successful GP2 career, although he is also a race-winner in Auto GP and was a Honda Formula 1 test driver in 2008.

Reigning series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top three.

Luca Filippi, making his first appearance with Bryan Herta Autosport, completed just eight laps but managed to register the 19th-best time, while fellow debutant James Davison at Dale Coyne Racing finished up in 21st.

WRC: Neuville, Ogier share Finland lead

By Scott Mitchell Thursday, August 1st 2013, 13:09 GMT

Sebastien Ogier, VolkswagenThierry Neuville and Sebastien Ogier hold a joint lead of Rally Finland after sharing the stages wins on the opening afternoon.

Championship leader Ogier won the first and third stages, but dropped time in the second as Neuville went quickest.

The Frenchman was then the only driver to complete the Koukunmaa stage in under seven minutes, his run of 6m59.4s almost a second quicker than the Belgian could manage.

Mikko Hirvonen is just 1.1s behind the tied duo, as even the 8.5-mile SS3 failed to spread out the leaders.

Ogier's VW team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala should also be in the fight, but damaged a suspension arm during the second stage after finishing behind the lead Polo on the first.

A superb run from Kris Meeke helped him claim third on SS3 and hold seventh position on his competitive debut in the Abu Dhabi Citroen DS3.

He was 14s ahead of Citroen regular Dani Sordo, who continued to struggle in the lower reaches of the top 10.

Jari Ketomaa led the early WRC2 running, with a strong lead over Hayden Paddon and Elfyn Evans. Robert Kubica lies fourth, a further 4.5s in arrears.

F1: Added attention a boost for Ricciardo

By Jonathan Noble Thursday, August 1st 2013, 11:40 GMT

Daniel Ricciardo, Toro RossoDaniel Ricciardo says he is revelling in the increased attention surrounding him as he bids to secure a Red Bull seat for 2014.

The Australian is on the shortlist of candidates to line-up alongside Sebastian Vettel next year.

But he has to convince the team's bosses that he is a better prospect than experienced drivers like Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.

Ricciardo is doing his chances no harm with a run of strong qualifying performances in the last few races, and impressed Red Bull during an audition during the recent Silverstone young driver test.

Analysis: how Red Bull will choose between Ricciardo and Raikkonen

He admits that rather than feel that the pressure to show well is a burden, he reckons it is inspiring him to do even better.

"I don't not like it," he said about the spotlight being on him. "I'm not saying I like all the extra media and all that, but behind the scenes, the odd phone call here and there telling me that this weekend is important, is good fun.

"It is what some of us enjoy about the sport. It is about pushing yourself when everyone is watching and, when you can prove it in front of a lot of eyes, then that is a rewarding feeling."

Irrespective of the need to do well if he is to stand a chance of the Red Bull seat, Ricciardo thinks he is at that stage of his career when it is essential he steps up his game anyway.

OPINION: Take Ricciardo, not Raikkonen

"Each race you do in F1, you expect more from yourself," he explained. "After doing more than two seasons, it is time I really have to start proving myself, even moving all the Red Bull stuff aside.

"It is really a time in my young career that I need to start impressing some people. So there is a bit of extra pressure, but motivation as well."

WRC: Pirelli to return to the WRC in 2014

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, August 1st 2013, 15:54 GMT

Pirelli logoPirelli will return to the World Rally Championship next year, the FIA confirmed on Thursday.

The Italian manufacturer, Formula 1's single tyre supplier, will join Michelin, DMACK and Hankook in the WRC from next season.

Pirelli left the sport at the end of 2010 to concentrate its efforts on Formula 1.

The company had been the WRC's control tyre supplier for three years before leaving.

"We are obviously very pleased to have competition between four manufacturers next year, three of whom are already supporting our Championships," said the FIA's rally director Jarmo Mahonen.

"Having Pirelli return to the series is also very positive, and together these four brands will provide a great platform for open competition as well as choice and variety for our competitors."
