RALLYX: Solberg seeking RX manufacturer deal

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 01 Oktober 2014 | 23.01

By David Evans Wednesday, October 1st 2014, 14:17 GMT

Newly crowned World Rallycross champion Petter Solberg is looking to land a deal with a manufacturer to enable him to commit his future to the series.

The Norwegian has dominated this year's inaugural World Rallycross Championship, winning four rounds and taking the title with two races to spare, with his own private team.

His title defence will, he feels, require more support next season.

"We have done this on our own," Solberg told AUTOSPORT. "We have competed with and beaten the big manufacturers this year, but it's been tough.

"The good thing is that we have an unbelievable team of guys who are willing to do everything it takes to be world champions."

Solberg is rumoured to have had offers to return to the World Rally Championship next season - along with the potential for race seats in other series - but he says he will be happy to stay in World RX with the right deal.

"The racing here is fantastic," he said. "We have made one hell of a show this year.

"I want to stay, I am ready to stay for the future, but I want to work with a manufacturer and I need a good backer."

Solberg enjoyed funding and technical support from Citroen for last season's European Rallycross Championship, but the development of his DS3 Supercar has been carried out by his own PSRX team this season.

"When you look at the resourced of the guys from Volkswagen or Peugeot or Ford, we have to be so proud of what we have achieved," he added.

"But I feel like we are ready for the next step now."

The 2003 World Rally champion took his second FIA world title with third place at last weekend's World RX of Italy - adding the crown to his 2003 WRC success.

On the subject of a possible rally return, Solberg added: "My immediate focus is on going to the final two rounds of this year's [World RX] Championship and driving freely and without any pressure.

"As well as that, I'm working towards next year and defending the title.

"I love rallying, everybody knows that, but there hasn't been any discussions about doing back [to WRC]."

This week's AUTOSPORT magazine - available on Thursday - features an exclusive guest column from Solberg on his World Rallycross success this year.

GP3: Morris gets GP3 test with Status

Wednesday, October 1st 2014, 14:47 GMT

Seb Morris, FR NEC 2014

Frontrunning GP3 team Status Grand Prix will test Formula Renault NEC race winner Seb Morris at Yas Marina next month.

The 18-year-old Briton, who finished third in the FR2.0 series this year with Fortec Motorsports, will drive with the team for all three days of the test following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.

"Now that my 2014 race season is over, our focus has immediately turned to on and off track preparations for 2015 and we are delighted to be going to Abu Dhabi with Status," said Morris.

"The challenge of learning to drive the more complex and powerful GP3 car is one I am relishing and I aim to make a good impression."

Team boss Teddy Yip Jr added: "We welcome Seb on board for the test and greatly look forward to working with him.

"Status has been keeping a close eye on his progress this year and, alongside his wins, his three pole positions have clearly demonstrated real speed.

"Over the three test days he will have the chance to learn GP3's Pirelli tyre, the car and the track, and then really go about setting some impressive times."

The GP3 cars will share the test with the GP2 teams, with each series running in alternate sessions across the three days.

Morris will also get a test in a Formula Renault 3.5 car this winter as his prize for finishing in the top three of the FR NEC standings.

RALLYX: Scott to stand-in for Villeneuve

By Hal Ridge Wednesday, October 1st 2014, 15:32 GMT

Jacques Villeneuve, World RX 2014

Jacques Villeneuve will be replaced in the Albatec Racing team by Marc Scott, son of team owner Andy Scott, for the eleventh round of the World Rallycross Championship in Turkey.

Villeneuve will miss the Turkish event due to his media commitments in Formula 1, as the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi clashes with the World RX event.

"I'm incredibly excited about making my World RX debut alongside my dad, and can't thank him enough for the opportunity," said the younger Scott.

"I've had two very successful seasons in RX150, and now feel the time is right to make the step up to the Supercar class.

"Although I've only raced the older [Peugeot] 306 at Croft last year, I have driven the 208 before and I'm confident that I can put on a good show in front of the thousands of World RX fans.

"I don't feel under any pressure, I know what I'm capable of and I know the car's potential, so I'll just go out there and do my job and get the best results I can."

Scott, who won the British based RX150 rallycross championship in 2013 and successfully defended his title this season, made his rallycross Supercar debut at the British Rallycross Grand Prix at the end of last year.

On his debut, Scott finished on the podium driving the ex-Will Gollop / Ollie O'Donovan championship-winning Peugeot 306 now owned by his father Andy, who he will partner for Albatec at Istanbul Part next week.

The Scotts are the first father and son pairing to race in World Rallycross.
