OTHER: AUTOSPORT involved in 'Grid' game

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 22 April 2014 | 23.01

Tuesday, April 22nd 2014, 15:10 GMT

AUTOSPORT has been involved in the development of a motorsport game for the first time in its history, working with Codemasters Racing on its new title 'Grid Autosport'.

The game, which is released on June 24 in the USA and June 27 in Europe, has been created with the intention of taking the 'Grid' series back towards the classic 'TOCA Touring Cars' racing games.

When the BTCC was king of the racing games

The game will feature several areas of motorsport, ranging from touring cars to endurance racing, single-seaters, street racing and drift events.

Journalists from AUTOSPORT have been involved in the development of the handling model for the cars, with the emphasis being on creating a title that will appeal to racing fans as well as gamers.

"The design philosophy was to create a really focused racing game," said chief games designer James Nicholls.

"We've jettisoned anything that doesn't support the on-track competition and we've chosen a selection of cars and tracks that will give players a range of different racing experiences."

AUTOSPORT's Simon Strang added: "The TOCA games were an office favourite back in the day, so when Codemasters said they wanted to take the series back to its core fanbase we got stuck in to help.

"Many of our guys that helped with the handling are either elite former racers or active amateurs, so Codemasters were able to extract aspects of knowledge and understanding that would otherwise slip by.

"While you want the cars to feel authentic, you don't necessarily want to spend hours mastering it, and we hope that the balance is struck right for the players of the game."

OTHER: Giorgio Pianta 1935-2014

By Gary Watkins Tuesday, April 22nd 2014, 14:29 GMT

Giorgio PiantaGiorgio Pianta, who had a long and varied career as a test driver, motorsport manager and racer, has died at the age of 78.

The Italian is perhaps best remembered as test driver, his role when he joined the Fiat Group's Abarth competitions department in the mid-1970s.

He helped develop the Fiat 131 Abarth with which Walter Rohrl took the 1980 World Rally Championship drivers' title and Fiat the manufacturers' crown

Pianta's abilities meant he was quickly promoted within the Abarth organisation and he took on more management responsibilities on the Lancia Rallye 037 and Delta S4 Group B progammes.

That led on to him being put in charge of racing activities at Alfa Romeo after it was incorporated into Fiat in 1986.

Former Lancia motorsport boss Cesare Fiorio told AUTOSPORT: "Giorgio was the guy who decided the set-up of all the rally cars.

"You always need a good driver to do that and he was a good driver, but he also had good technical solutions.

"That's why I gave him more responsibility in terms of the organisation of the service of the rally cars."

Pianta went on to have a 10-year career at Alfa Corse.

Alfa Romeo DTMHe oversaw Alfa's DTM triumph with Nicola Larini and the four-wheel-drive 155 V6 TI in 1993 and its early successes in the Super Touring category, including Gabriele Tarquini's triumph in the British Touring Car Championship in 1994.

Pianta left Alfa Romeo suddenly ahead of the end of the 1996 International Touring Car season, but continued to work for the Italian motorsport federation on a consultancy basis.

He started competing in the late 1950s at the wheel of a Fiat 1100 103 touring car and went on to enjoy success in both racing and rallying.

His career took him through, briefly, Formula 2 and Formula 3, included starts in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Targa Florio and a stint with the Conrero Opel touring car team.

Pianta was also given occasional appearances aboard both factory and privateer Lancia Beta Montecarlo Group 5 sportscars during his time with the Italian manufacturer.

He made a one-off Formula 1 start in the British Aurora series, finishing fifth at Nogaro in 1979 at the wheel of a David Price Racing-run Williams FW06.

F1: Red Bull: sensor issues indisputable

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 01 April 2014 | 23.02

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 15:36 GMT

Red Bull says that the FIA cannot dispute that there are problems with Formula 1's fuel sensors, following another failure for the team in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Just a fortnight after Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from the season opener in Australia for breaching F1's fuel-flow limit, the Australian's fuel sensor broke completely at Sepang on Sunday.

It meant the team had to rely on its own fuel-rail data readings to show its compliance with the regulations, although unlike in Australia this time the FIA accepted this course of action.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said the ongoing issues his team has faced are frustrating.

"It failed prior to the race," he said. "We informed the FIA about it and we asked the FIA if we could revive it on the grid by effectively power cycling the car.

"We did that at the start of the race but it didn't come back to life. So, the sensor didn't work the whole race.

"I think it clearly demonstrates that there are issues with these sensors."

While rival teams have not encountered the kind of troubles that Red Bull is facing, Horner said that there is no explanation as to why his outfit was suffering more than others.

"I've no idea why," he said. "Obviously we have a lot of data here to go away and look at.

"Theoretically there should not be a reason, but we need to look and understand it. Everyone else is happy with the sensor apparently.

"But Toro Rosso had two failures earlier in the weekend, and there have been other issues up and down the pitlane.

"They are the only ones we know about. But it certainly isn't unique to Red Bull."

F3: Carlin names first British F3 driver

By Marcus Simmons Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 13:41 GMT

British Formula 3 International Series team Carlin has confirmed its first driver for the 2014 campaign.

Chinese racer Peter Li Zhi Cong, who contested one British F3 round at Brands Hatch last year, will undertake a full season in one of the squad's Dallara-Volkswagen F308s.

Li has a background in Asian single-seater racing, and in 2013 won the region's GT series as well as contesting the Asian Porsche Carrera Cup.

"I'm pleased to be back with Carlin full time for the 2014 season," he said.

"I enjoyed my time testing and competing with them last year at Brands Hatch and I can't wait to start racing this year.

"I haven't raced at many of the tracks, but I'm confident that we can put some good work in on the simulator, enjoy a solid year together and learn as much as possible."

Carlin hopes to have at least two cars out for the British F3 season opener at Rockingham on May 4/5.

Team boss Trevor Carlin said: "It's an extremely relevant championship for young drivers looking to learn their craft and progress through the motorsport ranks.

"We're pleased to be competing again in such a great championship and look forward to the season kicking off in May."

F1: Raikkonen pins hopes on upgrades

By Ben Anderson Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 13:43 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen is pinning his hopes of an upturn in form in Formula 1 on a set of new parts expected for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Finn has struggled with the front end of his Ferrari in the first two races of the season.

He showed improved form through practice and qualifying for round two in Malaysia last weekend, before contact early in the race from Kevin Magnussen's McLaren ruined his chances.

Alonso not expecting Bahrain progress

Raikkonen says Ferrari is bringing new parts to his car for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and he is hopeful they will finally allow him to drive the F14 T in the way he would like.

"The car was very similar to the last race, but the circuit layout worked a bit better for our overall situation," said Raikkonen of his performance in Malaysia.

"For the next race we should get some new parts and be happier with the front end and drive a bit more how I want.

"The front end should feel a bit nicer after that, but we have to wait and see how we do on Friday and go from there.

"From the [pre-season] test [in Bahrain] I know there were some difficulties with the handling, but hopefully with some new parts we can sort that out and be even happier with the car than we were here.

"I think we have a pretty good understanding of what we want to do and where we want to go to make the feeling better and we can go much faster if we make that happen.

"The good thing is we did much better here [in Malaysia]. Obviously the results didn't show that but it's nice we're going in the right direction."
